The Great Michigan Mix-Up: A Comedy of Errors

Michigan wins a National title. Yawn. Did you watch the game? I tried to watch some of it but just couldn’t stomach watching it much further. Were they the best team in college football? Yes. Did they do it all legally without the rules of the game? Absolutely not. Two suspensions of the coach. Two removals of staffers tied closely to the program says otherwise. No Jim, if you’re indeed innocent, is any of this absolutely necessary? If you’re innocent why do you sit for three games?

Michigan’s JJ McCarthy is a very talented quarterback. A good player. Perhaps the best or better to come out of Michigan since Tom Brady. But JJ saying that 80% of teams are sign stealing. Let me get his actual quote.

“I also feel like it’s so unfortunate because there’s probably — I don’t want to say a crazy number, but I’d say a good number, 80% of the teams in college football steal signs. It’s just a thing about football. It’s been around for years “

JJ McCarthy

Well, you’re right about one thing. Sign-stealing itself, has been a part of the sport and gamesmanship for a long time. But, here is where there is a difference. Michigan sent players, and at times a coach, to stand on the sidelines and record video. Even dress up as part of the team to blend in. This is specifically mentioned as being banned by the NCAA. Did Michigan benefit? Sure. Ask a football coach if they like their chances better if they know what play is coming. Sure. Who wouldn’t take that?

My prediction on Jim Harbaugh. He’ll be under heavy investigation if he remains to stay at Michigan. He’ll set his sights back on the NFL as a way out of the NCAA investigations. No longer part of the NCAA pervue he’ll no longer have to cooperate with an investigation. What will receive the most punishment? The program. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Championship gets vacated. Just looked at USC. They were forced to vacate wins, lose their national championships, banned from bowl games for a number of years, and docked 30 scholarships.
