Reflecting on 20 Years of Star Wars: A Cultural Phenomenon

Good morning! It’s Monday, April 28th, and let’s get this moving. I had several blogs ready to go last week and after reading them just thought they were crap. So I ended up not publishing them. I always, in hindsight, tell myself that I should have just published them anyway. Who cares?!? DJ play that music.

My step-son Tommy and I sat through the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. I can’t believe it’s been twenty years. The film broke a record and is now the largest re-release in history, earning over thirty million dollars domestically. Think about that for a second. Re-releasing a film in the theater that people have already seen, that they can rent or perhaps they already own, and they choose to see it in the theater. Quite cool that it did so well. I enjoyed all the fans going nuts when just the ‘LucasFilm’ logo popped up on the screen.

A lot of parallels between that movie and what’s going on today. I’ll save that blog post for another day, but I’ll leave this one paragraph.

George Lucas intended the prequels to reflect how corruption and political dysfunction can make societies vulnerable to authoritarian figures who promise order and renewal. Trump’s rise was fueled by widespread disillusionment with the political establishment and the promise of a disruptive, decisive leader who could “drain the swamp” and restore greatness. Both narratives demonstrate how systemic failures can open the door to leaders who promise to fix everything-often at the expense of democratic principles.

It’s quite a scene when Palpatine grabs onto more power, and the people applaud.

Last bit of politics, but unrelated to the movie. Ben Shapiro had a good take after his interview with Zelensky. He discussed and made a solid case of why it’s in America’s interests not to let Russia steamroll over Ukraine.

The team’s offense struggled to gain momentum, partly due to Dansby Swanson’s current hitting slump. Once he regains his form, expect a significant boost in team performance.
