Sugar Noir: A Delicious Apple TV+ Concoction with Colin Farrell

I took a little break from blogging, and your worst nightmare came true. It’s not for good. Lets figure out where I want to go with today’s blog post.

Have you seen the new AppleTV+ show Sugar?

“Sugar,” the latest concoction served up by Apple TV+, is a contemporary noir series that seems to have raided a vintage Hollywood wardrobe, dusted off some fedoras, and decided that what the world really needs is Colin Farrell playing a private investigator named John Sugar. This is not your average bowl of detective cereal; it’s sprinkled with a dash of mystery, a spoonful of intrigue, and a generous helping of Farrell looking like he stepped out of a time machine set to “Brooding Noir Protagonist.” The show, created by Mark Protosevich and directed by Fernando Meirelles, promises a dreamy noir look that might just make you feel like you’re watching through a sepia-toned Instagram filter.

In “Sugar,” Farrell’s character delves into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, navigating the murky waters of Los Angeles with the help of his investigative partner Ruby, played by Kirby. It’s a tale as old as time, or at least as old as the noir genre, but with a modern twist—imagine if Humphrey Bogart had access to Google Maps and wasn’t afraid to use it. The series attempts to strike a balance between paying homage to classic noir and injecting a fresh take on the genre, though it occasionally trips over its own stylish fedora in the process. With a cast that includes James Cromwell, Amy Ryan, and Anna Gunn, “Sugar” aims to be a sugar-coated love letter to noir, even if it sometimes feels like the envelope got lost in the mail.

I’m two episodes in and it’s quite good so far.

I’ll move onto some golf…..

Sheff won the Masters. What separates him from everyone else? Scottie Scheffler’s exceptional golf skills are supported by several key statistics. In 2023, he gained 2.98 strokes per round tee-to-green, which was the second-best year of ballstriking in the Strokes Gained era, only behind Tiger Woods in 2006. Scheffler was also the leader in scoring average (68.629) and birdie average (5.48) in 2024. His greens in regulation percentage was 78% in 2023. In terms of strokes gained, Scheffler led the PGA Tour in 2023 with 2.57 strokes gained tee-to-green, and he was second in approach and seventh off-the-tee2. His overall strokes gained was a mammoth 2.49 strokes per round, which was the highest on the PGA Tour.

“Get rid of the beard.”

Ah, the annual ritual of sacrificing the winter beard at the altar of summer – a time-honored tradition where sharp razors and delicate facial maneuvers dance a perilous tango. As the temperature rises, so does the urgency to bid farewell to the cozy face blanket that kept you warm during icy gusts. It’s like saying goodbye to a loyal friend who’s accompanied you through movie marathons and snack binges, but let’s face it, your beard has officially become a hot and itchy accomplice in this seasonal conspiracy. Time to swap out the beard oil for some SPF, and embark on the treacherous journey of reclaiming your jawline from its fuzzy captor – all in the name of summer liberation!

Iran

Things are getting weird with Iran getting involved in this mess now. Peter Zeihan is not your average geopolitical analyst. With a blend of wit, wisdom, and a touch of eccentricity, he navigates the labyrinth of international relations like a fearless explorer on a quest for hidden truths. Armed with sharp insights and a penchant for coloring outside the geopolitical lines, Zeihan crafts a narrative that is as entertaining as it is informative. He weaves a tapestry of global affairs with such gusto that even the most complex geopolitical puzzles seem to unravel at his command. In a world of suits and ties, Peter Zeihan is the vibrant, unapologetically quirky splash of color that makes geopolitics not just fascinating, but downright fun.

But, if we need a more comical take, and need some levity to it all. Jon Stewart does a good job with that.

Yep. Wonder Girl got drafted into the WNBA as the #1 overall pick. My take is she’ll have a semi-hard time in the WNBA. We’ll see. Can she adapt and overcome it? You bet.

Yes, other people got drafted. I’m a bit of a fan of Cameron Brink. Geez, look at the gun show.
