Unveiling the Blarney: St. Paddy’s Day Shenanigans

Hey it’s St. Patrick’s Day. Yep. The favorite day to drink of the year. Lets get the brief history and what people screw up the most out of the way.

St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17th, is a cultural and religious holiday commemorating the death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. While it is a widely recognized celebration of Irish culture, St. Patrick himself was not actually Irish, but rather a Romano-British missionary. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and is a symbol of the country’s rich religious history. As the legend goes, St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish people, thus making it a significant symbol of the holiday.

The term “St. Paddy’s Day” is the correct shorthand for St. Patrick’s Day. The common mistake of referring to the holiday as “St. Patty’s Day” stems from the misconception that “Paddy” is short for “Patricia,” when in fact it is a diminutive of “Patrick.” Therefore, “Paddy” is the appropriate and respectful way to refer to the celebration and its namesake. Additionally, “Patty” is commonly associated with hamburger patties, making “St. Patty’s Day” a lighthearted yet inaccurate reinterpretation of the holiday’s name. By using the correct terminology, individuals can honor the cultural and historical significance of St. Patrick’s Day while paying homage to the legacy of St. Paddy himself.

I saw this funny video doing a remake of ‘Somebody that I Used to Know.’ Maybe better than the original.
