The NBA’s Ratings Crisis, Trinitiy Rodman, and it’s Time to Fly

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 19th, and we’re counting down the days until Christmas. Count it now: six days. DJ – play that song. I thought perhaps a different version of the ‘Last Christmas’ song might be worthwhile.

Dan Patrick’s NBA Problem

Dan Patrick gave a short answer to the NBA’s ratings problem: If the players don’t care, then the fans don’t care.

I break things down for the NBA a bit differently….

NBA Ratings: A Slam Dunk into the Abyss

The NBA’s TV ratings are sinking faster than a lead balloon in quicksand. It’s like watching a slow-motion replay of an airball – painful, yet oddly mesmerizing. Let’s break down this ratings tragedy, shall we?

The Villain: Load Management

Picture this: You buy tickets to see LeBron James, but instead, you get LeBron’s towel boy. That’s load management for you – the art of resting perfectly healthy millionaires. It’s like calling in sick to work, except your “work” is playing a game, and you still get paid millions. No wonder fans are changing the channel faster than Kyrie Irving changes his mind about the shape of the Earth.

NBA vs. NFL vs. MLB: A Tale of Three Leagues

  • NFL: The golden child of American sports. They could probably have players watch paint drying and still get better ratings than the NBA Finals.
  • MLB: Surprisingly holding strong. Turns out, watching guys spit sunflower seeds for 4 hours is more entertaining than we thought.
  • NBA: Currently in a ratings freefall that would make Felix Baumgartner jealous.

Other Factors in the NBA’s Ratings Nosedive

  1. Cord-Cutting: Fans are ditching cable faster than James Harden ditches teams.
  2. Three-Point Mania: Games now resemble a game of Pop-A-Shot at Dave & Buster’s.
  3. Officiating: More reviews than a Yelp page for a one-star restaurant.
  4. Injuries: Star players are spending more time in designer suits than jerseys.

The Silver Lining

Despite the ratings slump, the NBA just signed a massive media rights deal. It’s like getting a raise after sleeping through half your meetings. Go figure.

In conclusion, the NBA needs to fix its load management problem faster than Shaq at the free-throw line if it wants to stop this ratings freefall. Otherwise, they might find themselves less popular than professional curling. And let’s be honest, nobody wants that – except maybe the curlers.

Charles Barkley is always a good listen for his takes on the NBA. He was on yesterday, so I’ll also share his takes here. If you’re not into sports, today’s blog post is not for you.

Below is a long-form interview Trinity gave, talking about a lot of subjects but mostly touching on her father, Dennis Rodman. I’ll give you some bullet points below.

Trinity Rodman, the 22-year-old U.S. Women’s National Team soccer star, recently opened up about her complicated relationship with her father, NBA legend Dennis Rodman, on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. In the candid interview, Trinity described a fractured relationship with her father, characterizing him as emotionally distant and financially unreliable during her youth.

Key points from the interview include:

  1. Trinity stated that Dennis Rodman is “not a dad” beyond biological connection.
  2. She revealed financial struggles growing up, including living in a Ford Expedition and motels at times.
  3. Dennis would often accuse Trinity’s mother of only wanting his money when she sought financial help for the children.
  4. Trinity saw her father infrequently, about four times a year, even when living in the same city.
  5. She described her father’s lifestyle as constantly partying, which led to her mother moving the family out of his home.
  6. Trinity expressed frustration with her father’s public claims about wanting to be a better parent without taking action.
  7. She recounted an emotional moment when Dennis unexpectedly attended one of her soccer games, leading to mixed feelings.

Despite the strained relationship, Trinity admitted she still answers her father’s infrequent calls out of concern. The interview provided a rare glimpse into the personal life of the Olympic gold medalist, who has previously been reluctant to discuss her relationship with her famous father in public.
