A Close Call: My Friend’s Heart Attack and the Importance of Preventive Care

It’s a sobering experience when someone close to you faces a life-threatening health crisis. Recently, my good friend suffered a heart attack that required four stents. I’m incredibly grateful that he’s still with us, but this incident has made me reflect more on testing and preventive tools.

The Power of Regular Check-ups

One of the most crucial preventive measures we often overlook is the annual physical examination. One item I’m religious about is my yearly checkup with a wide variety of blood work. An annual check-up with comprehensive blood work could have potentially revealed warning signs, such as:

High Cholesterol Levels: A lipid panel would have shown his cholesterol levels, including LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, and triglycerides4. High LDL cholesterol is a significant risk factor for heart disease and can contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Blood Glucose Levels: Elevated blood sugar levels can indicate prediabetes or diabetes, both of which increase the risk of heart disease.

Other Cardiovascular Risk Factors: A complete blood count (CBC) and basic metabolic panel could have provided insights into overall health and potential risk factors for heart disease.

The Role of Wearable Technology

While an Apple Watch couldn’t have prevented the heart attack, it could have played a crucial role in early detection and emergency response:

Early Detection: The Apple Watch’s ECG app and irregular rhythm notifications could have alerted my friend to potential heart rhythm abnormalities, such as atrial fibrillation, a risk factor for heart conditions.

Continuous Monitoring: The device’s ability to track heart rate and provide notifications for unusually high or low heart rates could have signaled something was amiss.

Emergency Response: In a critical situation, the Apple Watch’s Emergency SOS feature could have been used to quickly call for help7. While it doesn’t automatically detect heart attacks, it provides a fast way to contact emergency services. Fast response times when something is amiss is critical.

A Cautionary Tale: Alberto Salazar’s Near-Death Experience

The case of Alberto Salazar, a world-class runner and coach starkly illustrates the importance of immediate response and the unpredictable nature of heart attacks. On June 30, 2007, Salazar suffered a severe heart attack on the Nike campus in Beaverton, Oregon. What makes his case particularly remarkable is that his heart stopped beating for an astonishing 14 minutes.

Despite being an elite athlete, Salazar’s life hung in the balance. Paramedics had to shock his heart multiple times to restore a pulse, and he required a total of eight shocks over 26 minutes to maintain a consistent heartbeat. Miraculously, Salazar not only survived but made an incredibly quick recovery, returning to the track just nine days later.

Salazar’s case underscores several crucial points:

  1. Even elite athletes can be at risk for heart attacks.
  2. Immediate CPR and emergency response are critical for survival.
  3. Managing risk factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol is essential, regardless of fitness level.
  4. The human body’s resilience can sometimes defy medical expectations.

Moving Forward: A Focus on Heart Health

This experience has been a wake-up call for all of us. Moving forward, we’re focusing on:

  1. Regular check-ups and blood work
  2. Recognizing and acting on potential warning signs
  3. Utilizing technology like the Apple Watch for continuous health monitoring
  4. Adopting heart-healthy lifestyle habits, including regular exercise and a balanced diet

While we can’t change what happened, we can use this experience to prioritize our heart health and potentially prevent similar incidents in the future. I’m thankful my friend is still with us, as it’s a shocking moment thinking of this all happening to someone that has been an intricate part of your life.

The 2025 Oscars played it relatively safe, opting for a subdued atmosphere that lacked the excitement and enchantment of previous years. However, there were still some surprises and memorable moments that kept viewers engaged.

One of the biggest surprises of the night was the dominance of the independent film “Anora,” which took home five awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. This upset many predictions, as Madison beat out favorite Demi Moore for the top acting prize.

Another unexpected turn was “Flow” winning Best Animated Feature over more prominent contenders like “The Wild Robot” and “Inside Out 2”. This marked Latvia’s first-ever Oscar win.

Amidst the predictable moments, viewers were treated to some entertaining personal anecdotes from the winners. Kieran Culkin, who won Best Supporting Actor, used his acceptance speech to remind his wife Jazz of a promise she made about having a fourth child if he won an Oscar. This lighthearted moment added a touch of humor to the proceedings.

Perhaps the most talked-about incident of the night involved Adrien Brody, who won Best Actor for “The Brutalist”. As he approached the stage to accept his award, Brody realized he was still chewing gum and quickly tossed it toward his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman, in the audience. This impromptu moment became an instant viral sensation, overshadowing his actual win for some viewers.

While the ceremony may have played it safe overall, these unexpected moments and personal touches helped keep the 2025 Oscars memorable for audiences.

Trump Tarriffs.

Trump went ahead and signed the tariffs into effect for Mexico, Canada, and China: 25% for Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% for China (which brings their total to 20%). World economists have pushed back on tariffs being a bad idea and not doing anything but driving up the cost of goods for the American consumer. The stock market reacted by dropping almost 900 points. This morning, China announced reciprocal tariffs on American goods, and Canada/Mexico said they would respond in kind. Consumers lose in trade wars.

Have a good Tuesday!
