Exploring Trump’s JFK Executive Order: What to Expect

Good morning! It’s Friday. It’s the end of a week, so let’s get the ball rolling.

First The Fun Stuff

We went to Torrey Pines to watch the Farmers Open. It was a gorgeous day—not too hot but comfortable. I was rooting for our local guy, Calvin McCall. That didn’t quite go as well as I had hoped. It was definitely a good time with good friends. It’s always enjoyable.

The only part of the day that was weird was our Uber ride after the golf course. We had this obnoxious driver who thought he was auditioning to be a stand-up comic. All he did the entire trip was tell very inappropriate jokes one after another. He started even making Jewish jokes and then boasted about it being okay because he’s German. I’m still shaking my head at this one.

The following day, yesterday, the winds kicked up an insane amount and the players were just trying to survive.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to declassify and release documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This move comes as part of Trump’s promise to bring transparency and accountability to government.

The Executive Order

The order directs the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General to develop plans for the release of these documents:

  • Within 15 days for JFK assassination records
  • Within 45 days for RFK and MLK assassination records

Trump emphasized the significance of this action, stating, “Everything will be revealed”. He even handed the pen used to sign the order to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary.

Historical Context

The assassinations of JFK, RFK, and MLK have long been subjects of public fascination and conspiracy theories:

  • JFK was assassinated in 1963, with Lee Harvey Oswald identified as the primary suspect
  • RFK was killed in 1968 while campaigning for the presidency
  • MLK was assassinated in 1968 amid his civil rights advocacy

Expectations vs. Reality

While this announcement has generated excitement, it’s important to temper expectations:

  1. Previous Releases: Trump made similar promises during his first term but ultimately withheld some documents due to national security concerns raised by the CIA and FBI.
  2. Existing Disclosures: A significant portion of the JFK assassination records (97% according to the National Archives) is already public.
  3. Redactions: Even with this new order, some information may still be redacted or withheld for national security reasons.
  4. Conspiracy Theories: It’s unlikely that these documents will definitively resolve long-standing conspiracy theories surrounding these assassinations.
  5. Time Frame: The actual release of these documents may take some time, as the order only sets deadlines for developing release plans.

While the release of these documents is a step towards transparency, it’s important to approach the information with a critical eye and realistic expectations. The documents may provide new insights, but they are unlikely to dramatically alter our understanding of these historical events or satisfy those seeking definitive answers to decades-old questions.
